The 4th edition of the
Mergelland Marathon
On Sunday 9 September 2001
the Marathon Zuid-Limburg Foundation will organise the 4th edition of the
Mergelland Marathon in South Limburg. Start, at 13.00 hours, and finish, from
about 15.30 hours onwards, will take place on the Markt in Meerssen (near
Maastricht) at the foot of the ancient Basilica. Last year Jean Herpers
finished first in 2 hours and 50 minutes despite the oppressing hot weather
conditions. The first women Inge van Bergen arrived after 3 hours - a fantastic
performance! On the Marsana 10 km run Marc Jaspers finished in 37 minutes and
first women was Manon Wenmekers after 46 minutes.
A new Marathon course
In 2001 the Marathon will
be run on a completely new course. To allow the audience to follow the runners
more intensively the Marathon will be divided over a small round through Meersssen
followed by two larger rounds of 21 km and 18 km around Meerssen through the
hills of South Limburg. The new course will be a bit less undulated than last
years. But, the Mergelland Marathon will still be a challenge for the runners!
More information on the new
course with altitude indications will follow in the next newsletter.
The 5 and 10 km Marsana
runs.
In 2001 we will add a 5 km
run to the Marsana 10 km run. Both runs will take place on a new course
as well on an almost completely traffic-free route in and around Meerssen. Of
course, also these runs will start and finish in the shadow of the Basilica on
the Markt.

next newsletter.
